The Cardinals have 9 rookies that could help them at some point in 2012. Here’s a look at them:
Shelby Miller: 21-year old righty starting pitcher Shelby Miller comes into this season as the Cardinals’ #1 prospect according to Baseball America. Miller pitched in 25 games (all starts) in A+AA-ball last year and he was 11-6 with a 2.77 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. He has now pitched in 51 games (all starts) in his first three years in the minors and he is 18-11 with a 3.17 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. Miller could help the Cardinals at some point in 2012, if they need a starting pitcher.
Lance Lynn: 25-year old righty starter/reliever Lance Lynn comes into this season as the Cardinals’ #7 prospect according to Baseball America. Lynn pitched in 18 games (2 starts) for the Cardinals last year and he was 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. He has now pitched in 77 games (72 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 32-18 with a 3.69 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. Lynn is going to start the season in the Cardinals’ starting rotation in place of an injured Chris Carpenter.
Eduardo Sanchez: 23-year old righty reliever Eduardo Sanchez comes into this season as the Cardinals’ #8 prospect according to Baseball America. Sanchez pitched in 26 games (0 starts) for the Cardinals last year before going down to injury and he was 3-1 with 5 saves, a 1.80 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He also pitched in 5 games (0 starts) in AA+AAA-ball last year and he was 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA and a 0.68 WHIP. Sanchez has now pitched in 177 games (7 starts) last year in his first six years in the minors and he is 12-8 with 36 saves, a 3.17 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Sanchez should be a big time asset in the pen for the Cardinals in 2012.
Matt Adams: 23-year old lefty swinging 1B Matt Adams comes into this season as the Cardinals’ #9 prospect according to Baseball America. Adams played in 115 games in AA-ball last year and he was 139 of 463 (.300 avg, .923 OPS) with 80 runs scored, 32 homers and 101 RBIs. If something happens to Lance Berkman, Adams could get his first shot at the show.
Matt Carpenter: 26-year old lefty swinging 3B Matt Carpenter comes into this season as the Cardinals’ #12 prospect according to Baseball America. He played in 7 games for the Cardinals last year and he was 1 for 15 (.067 avg, .396 OPS). If David Freese gets hurt again in 2012, Carpenter could get his big shot at the show.
Maikel Cleto: 22-year old righty starter/reliever Maikel Cleto comes into this season as the Cardinals’ #14 prospect according to Baseball America. Cleto pitched in 3 games (0 starts) for the Cardinals last year and he was 0-0 with a 12.46 ERA and a 2.54 WHIP. Chambers could make it to the Cards as a backup outfielder in 2012 at some point.
Tony Cruz: 25-year old righty swinging catcher Tony Cruz comes into this season as the Cardinals’ #20 prospect according to Baseball America. Cruz played in 38 games for the Cardinals last year and he was 17 of 65 (.262 avg, .672 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 0 homers and 6 RBIs. I could see Dickson helping out the Cardinals at some point in 2012 as either a starter or a long reliever.
