The Cardinals essentially did 33-year old righty starter/reliever Matt Clement a favor by releasing him so that he could pursue other opportunities with major league teams. He pitched in 15 games (3 starts) on a rehab assignment in A+AA+AAA ball and he was 3-0 with a 3.94 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. Clement has pitched in 238 games (236 starts) in his major league career and he is 87-86 with a 4.47 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. He will likely hook on with some team that will give him a chance this season.

Chris Duncan will miss the remainder of the season as he will need surgery to repair a herniated cervical disk. This could be a career threatening injury for Duncan. Duncan played in 76 games for the Cardinals this season and he was 55 for 222 (.248 avg, .711 OPS) with 26 runs scored, 6 homers and 27 RBIs.
