The Cardinals signed righty reliever Cliff Politte to a minor league contract. He last pitched in the majors in 2006 with the Chicago White Sox. Politte has pitched in 330 games (16 starts) in his major league career and he is 22-23 with 15 saves, a 4.40 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. The last time Politte had a healthy, full season in the majors he was dominant so he could help the Cardinals bullpen this season.

The Cardinals have inked reserve infielder D’Angelo Jimenez to a minor league contract. Jimenez played in 73 games last season for the Nationals and he was 25 for 102 (.245 avg, .752 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 2 homers and 10 RBIs. Jimenez has now played in 641 games in his major league career and he is 568 for 2,159 (.263 avg, .728 OPS) with 290 runs scored, 36 homers and 228 RBIs. Jimenez will have an excellent shot of replacing Aaron Miles and getting quite a few at bats for the Cards next season.

The Cardinals have traded Jim Edmonds to the Padres for minor league 3B David Freese. Freese was in A-Ball last season as a 24 year old. Freese played in 128 games last season and he was 152 for 503 (.302 avg, .889 OPS) with 104 runs scored, 17 homers and 96 RBIs. The Cardinals probably eye Freese as the player who will eventually replace Scott Rolen at 3B in the future.

The St. Louis Cardinals surprisingly cut ties with Aaron Miles

Blogged under Front Page, Arrivals and Departures, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Thursday 20 December 2007 at 1:36 pm

The Cardinals surprisingly decided not to tender Aaron Miles a contract for the 2008 season making him an unrestricted free agent. Miles played in 133 games last season for the Cardinals and he was 120 for 414 (.290 avg, .676 OPS) with 55 runs scored, 2 homers and 32 RBIs. Miles has now played in 590 games in his major league career and he is 480 for 1,698 (.283 avg, .680 OPS) with 218 runs scored, 12 homers, 139 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. Miles should have little problem finding a job for the 2008 season.

UPDATE: The Cardinals have re-signed Aaron Miles to a 1-year, $1.4 million dollar contract. This was a good move for the Cardinals as Miles should have never been let go in the first place.
